Job losses imminent at Mercedes (F1).

News is surfacing that at least 50 workers at its high performance plant in Brixworth, England. are to be made redundant. The German manufacturer, which provides engines for Force India and Brawn as well as McLaren, has stated that Formula One’s 2009 rule changes are the reason for the cuts.

Mercedes returned to F1 in 1994 providing the Sauber team with powerplants and started its ongoing partnership with McLaren – which now sees the marque a majority shareholder of the team – the following year. However, with new technical regulations for 2009 deeming that engines must last for three race weekends rather than two and with only eight units on offer per driver for the season, the Northamptonshire-based company no longer requires such high output.
