Marks and Spencer plans to close a swath of its Simply Food stores, marking a shift in its aggressive expansion of the chain in recent years.

As the retailer looks to trim its cost base in some of the toughest trading conditions it has seen in a decade, M&S has been quietly gauging appetite among rival chains to see if they might want to take over some of its Simply Food sites, say industry insiders.

The retailer will also close a couple of its smaller clothing and food stores. As a result, about 1,000 jobs will be shed. M&S declined to comment.

The problem with Marks & Sparks management is that they failed to notice that their food was too expensive when the difficult times started to bite. Why should I pay more for something I can get else where for cheaper? Is that not common sense?
